Dr. John Vincent Pua, better known as Doc Jay-vee in the medical profession and by his friends, advised that we only need at least soap and water in our homes in order to fight against the Coronavirus, the culprit behind today’s deadly pandemic, the COVID-19.
Washing our hands with soap and water alone can give us a sure wall of protection against being infected by the virus. This simple but necessary must-do provides sufficient time to kill the bacteria and viruses. It’s obviously better than using alcohol because aside from soap is adequately available, frequent rubbing of alcohol can also dry our skin. Hand sanitizers could be another choice. But like alcohol, its efficacy is reduced when applied to wet or sweaty hands as it is diluted. Both alcohol and sanitizers may not be able to reach the viruses attaching themselves to a sticky grease surface of skin, something that soap can easily perform. Perhaps, you might have also been hearing about alcohol poisoning? This happens by accidentally misusing or overusing alcohol. Health agencies all over the world are in unison in reminding us to spend at least a “20-second washing of hand” routine, as it remains to be the gold standard in hygiene in the midst of Covid-19 spread. Prof. Palli Thordarson of the School of Chemistry at the University of New South Wales in Australia explained that most viruses consist of three key building blocks: RNA, proteins, and lipids. They provide the structure of the virus and act like a ‘Velcro,’ thus hard to break up, but not impossible, with the use of soap. Prof. Thordarson further elaborated that soap has fat-like compounds that can dissolve the lipid layer, which is coating or shielding the virus. These compounds untangle weak bonds within the virus by binding with them and causing the virus to detach from the skin. This chemical cycle is completed when one thoroughly washed hands with soap covering the entirety of the hands before rinsing and drying. A perennial user, Doc Jay-vee advises us to use Psalmstre New Placenta Herbal Beauty Soap, a bunch of skincare products that has been trusted for over 20 years.
