Reported by Celso De Guzman Caparas  “Daluyong,” an entry by a young filmmaker from Quezon Province, was named Grand Prix winner of the 2022 MBC Short Film Festival. Directed by Ervie Jay Torzar, and set among the native fisherfolk in Atimonan, the movie depicts the heartwarming story of an aspiring rapper who fishes by day to help augment the family income, only to have his dream cut short when his mother succumbs to the Covid-19 virus. “Daluyong” bested four other finalists in the Short Feature category before copping the grand prize over Gio Gonzalvez’ “Kambalingan,” which was this year’s Best Documentary, and Are Jay Peralta’s “Proud,” which was declared Best Animated Film. The three category winners, who will receive PhP 100,000 each, lorded it over an original field of 153 entries, which were later trimmed down to 15 finalists. Torzar will get an additional PhP100,000 for his Grand Prix win.
Garnering the most number of online votes from July 15-29, Jericho Rimando’s “The Transfiguration of Marya” won the Viewers’ Choice award. Like Peralta, Rimando also competed under the aegis of the University of Makati. The 2022 MBC Short Film Festival featured a stellar line-up of jurors, led by Cannes World Film Festival Best Director Epy Quizon, Disney Animation’s Head of Story Josie Trinidad, and former USIS Audio-Visual Specialist Agnes Caballa, who is now creative consultant for GMA-7. Category jurors included Sundance Grand Prix winner Don Josephus Raphael Eblahan, Khavn dela Cruz, Nicole Yulo, Sari Dalena, Jewel Maranan, Miker Rivero, Mars Cabrera, Martin Macalintal of the French Embassy, and Gary Thomas of the British Council. MSFF 2022 is a project of Manila Broadcasting Company with generous support from Dito Telecommunity, Solbac, Beko, the Asian Institute of Computer Studies, Zuki by SB Finance, and Alfonso Light Brandy.  Okada Manila, acclaimed as Manila’s grand icon, hosted the prestigious Miss Philippines-Earth’s (MPE) swimwear competition and press presentation of 20 young aspiring beauty queens and environmental advocates from all over the country in July 28, 2022. Highlights of the event include the swimsuit presentation of the participants as part of the preliminary competition which featured the candidates’ catwalk and presented their advocacies, plans, and vision towards protecting our environment. Miss Universe 2015 PiaWurtzbach, Miss Universe 2016 Iris Mittenaere, and Miss Universe 2017 Demi-Leigh Peters will be hosting the coronation night. More so, Miss Universe 2018 Catriona Gray was also invited to attend the coronation night but it was not mentioned on what will be her role at the coronation.
Also, the Miss Universe Philippines (MUPH) organization continues to tease fans on their grandest coronation night yet, sharing that Miss Universe 2021 Harnaaz Sandhu will be one of their special guests.Harnaaz is now in the Philippines and will sashay comes the pageant night. This will be her reunion with MUPh 2021, Beatrice Luigi Gomez, who is closed to Harnaaz during their MU 2021, after more than 4 months. Other candidates from MU 2021 will also join the reunion. Kathryn Bernardo spent her birthday at El Nido Palawan with his beau, Daniel Padilla and the rest of her closest friends. While enjoying her motherhood and hiatus in showbiz, Anne Curtis spent her vacation at Pearl Farm Beach Resort where he greeted her followers “MaayongAdlaw. Davao ☀lysm.” Since giving birth to Dahlia, her first born with popular chef and social media influencer ErwanHeussaf, she decided to lay low from showbiz and to give more time for her daughter. Her last project was an online series the, “Kangks Show”, which was trending because of its humorous approach of educating people on sex life and relationship goals. Angelica was also a vocal supporter of VP Leni and made a talk-about video telling the public to be aware of who they will vote for. The video seemed a response to Daryl Yap’s mini-series about Lenlen, an apparent attack to discredit VP Leni who is running for president. Hours before the commencement of the wedding ceremony, the actors’ agencies VAST Entertainment and MSTeam stated through a statement, “Actors Son Ye Jin and Hyun Bin are holding their wedding ceremony today, taking their first step as a married couple. The ceremony will be private in consideration of the situation with COVID-19, so we ask for your generous understanding. We are sharing the news with their wedding photos instead.”The agencies continued, “We express deep gratitude for the many blessings and warm support sent for their new beginning. Actors Hyun Bin and Son Ye Jin along with their agencies will continue to put in full effort to give back for the love received.” The couple started to collaborate on the 2018 film “The Negotiation”. A year after that, Hyun Bin and Son Ye Jin reunited in a highly acclaimed and followed 2019 drama “Crash Landing on You.”  After the success of their drama, rumors circulated that two were dating after they were reportedly seen shopping together at what appears to be a supermarket outside of Korea. Photos who appear to be Hyun Bin and Son Ye Jin were over the internet on January 21, 2019. Both actors are wearing caps, and Son Ye Jin is also wearing sunglasses. Despite the speculation neither of the half of BinJin couple confirmed nor denied the rumors about the status of their relationship. It was another victory for the Philippines after its bet, Kathleen Paton was crowned Miss Eco International 2022 during a pageant held in Egypt on March 17 (March 18, Manila time).
Kathleen, 24, is an Australian-Filipino model. The 5’8 stunner won Miss Manila in 2018. Aside from winning in the international pageant, Kathlen was crowned Miss Teen International in 2017. Since the Philippines joined the Miss Eco International in 2018, the country consistently making it to the final two. Cynthia Thomalla first won the crown in 2018. Then, the country made a history for a back-to-back first runner up with Maureen Montagne and Kelly Day in 2019 and 2021, respectively.
Kathleen secured her Top 21 spot for winning the Best in Eco Video award. As a winner of the pageant, she will closely work as a United Nations ambassador for the environment.
Joining Kathleen’s court were: Belgium, 1st runner-up; USA, 2nd runner-up; Spain, 3rd runner-up; and Malaysia, 4th runner-up. She bested other 40 candidates around the globe.  Besting over 90 other candidates, Karolina Bielawska of Poland was named Miss World 2021 held in San Juan, Puerto Rico on Wednesday, March 16 (Thursday morning, March 17 in Manila). Karolina succeeded Toni-Ann Singh of Jamaica, whose reign was extended after the 2020 pageant was postponed due to the COVID-19 pandemic. After 32 years following Aneta Beata Kreglicka in 1989, Karolina went on to finally bag the Miss World crown for Poland.
The 22-year old newly crowned Miss World is a popular model in their country. She dreams to become a motivational speaker and a TV host. She has a bachelor’s degree in business management and currently pursuing her master’s degree. In her profile on the Miss World website, it stated there that “Her biggest passion is traveling. She enjoys swimming and scuba diving. Karolina is also very passionate about voluntary work, and she constantly supports the homeless. ‘Intouchables’ is her favorite film.” Karolina is very enthusiastic about doing volunteer work. Karolina's started her Beauty with a Purpose project "Zupa Na Pietrynie" which provides ongoing assistance to homeless people in crisis. She aims to raise awareness concerning the issue by combating the exclusion of others in society because of their social condition.
Every Sunday, they serve nearly 300 people in Lodz who are in need of hot meals, food packages, drinks, clothing, masks, legal advice, and professional medical care. Many of these people were unable to register for a COVID-19 vaccine, but the project was able to obtain government approval for over 400 people to receive their vaccinations. In addition, the project constructed Lodz's first Social Bathroom for people experiencing homelessness. Beauty with a Purpose winner Shree Saini of USA was the first runner-up, while fan-favorite Miss Côte d'Ivoire Olivia Yacé was named the second runner-up.
On the other hand, Tracy Maureen Perez ended her Miss World journey with a Top 13 placement.
The Miss World 2021 coronation night was originally scheduled last December, but due to Covid surge in Puerto Rico and some candidates and staff of the organization got infected, the organization moved the schedule on March. |
